Introduction
• Telomeres act as a specialized origin of
replication that allows the cell to replicate the
ends of chromosomes.
What Telomeres Are:
• All eukaryotic chromosomes end in telomeres.
• It is unique structures at the end of
chromosomes are necessary for chromosome
intigrity and genomic stability.
Telomerase
• This enzyme is a Ribonucleoprotein.
• Mammalian telomere have six protein
complex called SHELTERIN containing
sequence TTAGGG.
End Replication Problem
Role Of Telomere In Cancer
I. As a cell begins to cancerous , it divides more
often and its telomere becomes very short.
II. Telomerase is over expressed in cancerous
cells.
Role In Ageing
I. It reduces physiological function and
increase in chance of disease and death.
II. Ageing is a degenerative process.
Conclusion
I. Measuring telomerase may be a new way to
detect cancer.
II. Most of the anti-telomerase drugs are still in
clinical phase 1 and 2.
