BIOTECNOLOGIA
THE MICRO ALGAE HAEMATOCOCCUS PLUVIALIS IS ONE OF THE BEST
PRODUCERS OF THE RED CAROTENOID ASTAXANTHIN, BECAUSE IT HAS THE
CAPACITY TO ACCUMULATE MORE THAN 3% (2.6 G / L) IN DRY PIGMENT
WEIGHT. IT HAS A CELL SIZE BETWEEN 8 AND 50 ΜM.
Growth

 High growth rates have been found when using a light intensity of 2
and 37 μmol / m2 s.
 Growth inhibition at 89 μmol / m2 s.
 Around15% more growth was found at 90 μmol / m2 s compared to
exposure at 40 and 140 μmol / m2 s.
 It has been observed that the maximum growth of the microalga is
obtained when it is subjected to an initial concentration in the
culture medium of 3 mM of nitrogen (NaNO3), of phosphate
(K2HPO4 and KH2PO4) of 3.4 mM and 18 μM of iron (FeSO 4 .7H 2 O).
 While the maximum accumulation of astaxanthin is obtained in the
total absence of nitrogen, a phosphate concentration of 0.85 mM
and 72 μM of iron.
 The highest consumption of Astaxanthin at present is as a source of
pigmentation in aquaculture, especially in salmon and trout.
 Astaxanthin is marketed at a cost of US $ 2,000 to US $ 2,500 / kg.
 Natural production has a value of US $ 3000 / kg.
 The estimated annual worldwide market is US $ 200 million.
