FUTURE OF COAL?
• The government estimates that coal will remain the main energy source in
the country for the next 30 years, despite a significant erosion of its share in
the energy mix from about 58% in 2015 to 42-48% by 2047.
• The country has set a target to double its coal production from 708 Mt in
2016 to 1.5 Gt by 2020 and plans to become self-sufficient by the end of FY
2018.
• coal imports have decreased due to the growing domestic production India
plans to auction 23 new coal mines in 2017-2018

CONCLUSION
• India had 11.35% share of supercritical technology based power plant in the
total coal based power plant capacity. Further, during 12th Plan, capacity
addition from supercritical technology based coal power plants is likely to
contribute around 39% of the total capacity addition from coal based
plants. Moreover, to achieve NDC target and Paris Agreement, India needs
to increase its share of clean coal technology from 11.35% to 50% by 2047
under BAU scenario and 80% under CCT scenario by 2047.
