STAR Program
(Striving Towards Academic
Recovery)
Mission
• The star program offers a
professional and confidential
setting for academic coaching by
graduate students enrolled in the
clinical mental health counseling
program, an d MSW programs. The
mission of the program is to offer
developmental support of students
as they pursue academic recovery
and explore personal growth.
Primary goal
• Our goal is to assist students with getting back on track academically so that they can
be successful at UNCP.
• The STAR Program Coordinator is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who
supervises a staff consisting of graduate students enrolled in UNCP’s Clinical Mental
Health Counseling program.
Core Values & Ethics
Service.
• Star faculty and staff work to serve others. Putting the needs of students above their own.

• Star faculty and staff work looks beyond cultural differences, and embraces each person
for their own uniqueness.
Importance and centrality of human relationships.
• Star faculty and staff work to build relationships with students , who are in need of
academic help by setting up weekly meetings to establish rapport and build trust. They
engage people as partners in the helping process. Overall, they work to build purposeful
relationships in an effort to promote, restore, maintain, and enhance the well-being of
students here at UNCP.
Competence.
• Star faculty and staff continually engage themselves as learners to increase their
professional knowledge and skills to help students become the best versions of themselves.
History
• The STAR Program was created in Fall 2015.
Need & future direction
• Need more resources to be able to do
more outreach
• The future of STAR is bright! Statistics
show that there is direct positive
correlation between those who use
STAR and a higher GPA.
