Rating Scale:
Rating Scale is a device by which
judgments may be qualified or an opinion
concerning a trait can be analyzed. Rating
scale is a tool in which the one person
simply checks of another person”s level of
performance.
Rating means judgement of one person by
another.It is a technique where the
individual’s personality is assessed by the
impressions he makes upon others.

A rating scale consists of a set of traits


such as generosity, co- operativeness,
honesty,etc and range of descriptions that
are to represent degree or frequency of
presence of the traits.
Types of Rating Scales:

 Numerical Rating Scale


Graphic Rating Scale
Semantic Differential Scale
Numerical Rating Scale:
A sequence of numbers is assigned to
descriptive categories; the rater marks a
number to indicate the degree to which a
characteristic is present.
Graphic Rating Scale:
A set of categories described at certain points
along the line of a continuum; the rater can
mark his or judgment at any location on the
line.
Semantic Differential Scale:
A rating scale in which bipolar adjectives are
placed at both ends or poles of the scale, and
response options are expressed as semantic
space.
Advantages of Rating Scale
Evaluate performance.
Give more insight on how well/often the
child performed each task.
Structured and standardized.
Easy to compare.
Easy to use and understand.
Disadvantages of Rating
Scale:
Ambiguity.
Attitude of rater.
Personal bias may occur.
Cumulative Record
A confidential and systematic accumulation
of significant factual information about an
individual student while at school.
It is a readily available permanent data
about a child.
It is progressively developed and
maintained over a sufficient period of time.
It gives a summarized growth record
indicating the direction and rate of
development.
Cumulative record contains information
pertaining to a child’s health, family, school,
performance on psychological tests,
vocational goals , etc.
Merits
Helps in identifying the needs and problems
of each student.
 Helps in assessing the pupil’s occupational
insight.
If a child transfer from one school to
another, cumulative record helps the teacher
in new school, in getting a comprehensive
idea about the student.
Demerits
Subjectivity will cause interpretation of
cumulative record difficult.
If the recording of the information is not
authentic and accurate, it will do more harm
than better.
