What is Media Literacy?
• Twenty years ago media literacy would have been defined as reading book,
newspapers or magazines. Today in our technological world media literacy
now includes the internet.
Did you know?
• That media is available 24 hours seven days a week?

• That children between the ages of 8-18 are spending an average of 7 hours
and 38 minutes outside of school on outside media?
Do you know what that means?
• Someone else telling our children information
• Is the information that they are hearing true?
• Do they believe everything they are hearing?
What is Media Literacy?

• Media literacy is the ability to think


critically about what we see and hear!

Media is manmade. The information may or may not be real.
Who created this message?
Media has a tendency to shape our perception of what is true.
What did they use to catch my attention?
Someone can hear something one way but another person in the same
room can hear it a different way. How might different people interpret the
message that they are hearing?
