Pile Load Test

Presented by:
Engr. Muraduddoula, QC Manager, DSTP Project
Objective

• This test is used to determine the “ Load Carrying Capacity”

of a pile

• This test gives us the value of

Ultimate Load Value

Safe Load Value

Settlement under different values of load

Actual length of the pile

Types of Test for Single Pile

• Vertical static load test

Axial Compression test (ASTM D1143)

Axial Tensile test (ASTM D3689)

• Lateral load test (ASTM D3966)

• High strain dynamic test (ASTM D4945)

• Low strain Impact Integrity test (ASTM D5882)

Axial Compression test on Franki Pile
• Purpose of test
Determine the settlement under working load
Determine the ultimate bearing capacity

• Equipment
Hydraulic Jack
Hydraulic pump
Dial gauge
Pressure gauge
Reference beam
Test beam
Etc.
Axial Compression test on Franki Pile
• Test procedure (ASTM D1143)
 Pile test shall be carried out after 4 weeks (BNBC-2006)
 Maintain Load (ML) test method shall be used
 After completing pile test set-up increase load up to 2
times of working load (BNBC-2006).
Working load=1000kN; Test load =2000kN
 If settlement more than 10% of pile diameter, consider
it is fail (BS EN 1997-1:2004)
 Unloading the test load according to (ASTM D1143)
procedure
Result of Franki Pile Test
The pile test result are computed to obtain
the graphical relation between,
• Time vs Load curve
• Time vs Settlement curve
• Load vs Settlement curve
For any load settlement can be calculated by
Lateral Load test for Franki Pile
• Purpose of Test
To determine the standard measurement of vertical pile lateral deflection.

• Equipment
Hydraulic Jack
Hydraulic pump
Dial gauge
Pressure gauge
Reference beam
Weighted platform
Etc.
Lateral Load test on Franki Pile

• Test procedure (ASTM D3966)

 Pile test shall be carried out after 4 weeks (BNBC-2006)

 After completing pile test set-up increase load up to 2.5 times of working
load. Lateral Design Load=100kN; Test load =250kN

 Unless failure occurs first apply and remove a total test load

 Unloading the test load according to (ASTM D3966) procedure
