THREE CYLINDER OR A THREE THROW PUMP

TWO CYLINDER DOUBLE ACTING OR DUPLEX PUMP

Assume the pump to be double acting.

GIVEN : Q = 50 lit/sec H = 20 m

L = 400mm D = 300mm

slip = 2%

TO FIND
Speed of the pump
GIVEN : Q = 50lit/sec D= 300mm N = 60rpm

d = 50mm L = 400mm

hs = 5m hd= 10m

To find ;

a. Force required to operate the pump for outward and inward stroke
b. the slip
c. The power output
GIVEN : Hat = 10.3 D= 30 cm d= 12.5cm

hvap = 2.5 m L = 45 cm ls = 8m

hs = 4m f = 0.02

To find ;

a. max speed of the pump

b. the discharge
c. The pressure head at the middle and end of the suction stroke.
The pressure at the beginning of the suction stroke is

h = Hatm - hs - has

h= 10.3 - 4 - has
h≥ hvap
10.3 - 4 – has ≥ 2.5
has ≤ 3.8

ω= 1 .9 and N = 1.9 *60 / 2* π

N = 18.14 rpm
= 0.01 m3/sec

1.9 2.462

2.462

hf = 0.4
Pressure head at the middle of the stroke=
= hatm – hs –hf
= 10.3 – 4 -0.4
= 5.9 m

Pressure head at the end of the stroke=

= hatm – hs +has
= 10.3 – 4 + 3.8
= 10.1 m

A single acting reciprocating pump has a piston of
30cm diameter and a stroke of 450 mm. The level of
the water in the sump is 4m below the center line of
the pump and the storage reservoir is 30m above
the center line of the pump. The suction and
delivery pipes are 10m and 120m long and are
125mm in diameter. Estimate the max speed of the
pump in order to avoid separation. Take vapor
pressure of water as 2.5 m and atmospheric
pressure as 10.3 m of water. At this speed calculate
the discharge of the pump in liters per minute.
