next to you everything you know
about Me’raj. Be prepared to
share your responses with the
rest of the class.
Key Points
• Took place on the 27th night of the month of
Rajab in the year before hijrah.
• While the Holy Prophet finished his night
prayers angel Jibrail came to him with the
invitation of Allah to have a journey to the
highest heaven.
• Angel Jibrail first took him to the Kabah (the
Masjid al Haram) and from there he was taken
to Masjid-ul-’Aqsa.
“Glory be to Him Who took his servant by night
from Masjid-ul-Haram to Masjid-ul-’Aqsa the
precincts of which We have blessed…”

• The first verse of this Surah discusses the issue of

the journey by night of the Prophet (S) from
Masjid-ul-Haram (The Sacred Mosque) to Masjid-
ul-’Aqsa (Bayt-ul-Muqaddas)
• Aqsa means "the farthest." This does not refer to
Masjid al Aqsa in Jerusalem
• According to the Ahl ul Bayt the mi-raj was a
physical ascension, not a vision or
dream in sleep
“…that We show him (some) of Our signs…”

• The Holy Qur’an implies that Allah’s objective in

this extraordinary night trip was to expose to him
His signs of power, and wonders of creation.
• The Prophet (S) had formerly acquired full
knowledge of Allah’s magnitude, yet this tour of
the skies let him see more, which in turn helped
him further to guide human beings.
The Signs the Prophet Witnessed
• During his journey the Prophet met various
prophets and angels
• He saw both Paradise and Hell and the various
stages and levels of the people of Paradise and
those of Hell
• He witnessed celestial bodies and the entire
universe
• He visited the birthplace of Prophet Isa (A) in
addition to the houses and
important places of the previous
prophets
