Process Design of Piping- Basics

.Process design of pipe is a balance between size/diameter of pipe


and pressure drop.

 Larger size of pipe increases the fixed cost of pipe and lower
pressure drop means lower operating cost of pipe. For a given flow
rate of fluid, larger size of pipe will give lesser pressure drop.

 Ideal scenario is to look for optimum pipe size.

Piping- Basic Design Considerations

.If the fluid has to be pumped through the pipe, the size should be
selected to give the least annual operating cost.

 In a piping system there is rarely only straight pipe.

 Piping has elbows, bends, tees, and other branch connections.
