GDPR

What has recently changed due to GDPR in the EU?

GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation. It is an EU law about data protection, which has
recently changed because the old data protection act didn’t consider online businesses in mind.

One of the changes in the GDPR law is that it includes new rights where the public can access information
companies such as Facebook, holds about them. Another change is that consent must be given by a user
for the company to use their personal data, if consent isn’t given then the company cannot use that
individuals personal data
Facebook
Some of the main changes that will be made is that Facebook will be redesigning the settings menu
to make it easier to access your privacy settings.

Another change will be that Facebook is adding a shortcut to the main menu for privacy settings and
with a few click you can activate two-factor authentication for instance.

Probably one of the biggest updates is that Facebook is allowing you to download your data. This
means that users can securely manage information and posts shared on the platform, whether its
downloading this data to keep or deleting it from the site altogether.
Google (Gmail)

With Google they have a setting where it allows the user to choose what activity/data is saved to
Google.

Another thing is that they have created a My Account where the user can “switch off” location history,
YouTube search history and web and app activity.

Users can also be able to view and delete any data that is collected from Google and be able to
manage or mute any ads that pop up when they use Google.

The security and Privacy checkups have also been updated on Google, where it ensures accounts are
safe and Google has allowed the option where users can check up on these.
Snapchat

For snapchat, the business will retain less data about people under the age of 16. If the business
needs information about a young person a guardian must give consent before doing so.

Under 16s can still use the app however services such as location details will not be collected and
used by Snapchat.
