PARTS OF A WIND TURBINE
GENERATOR

The wind turbine

generator converts
mechanical energy
to electrical energy.
TOWER

The tower of the

wind turbine carries
the nacelle and the
rotor.
HIGH-SPEED SHAFT

The high speed shaft

drives the electrical
generator.
NACELLE

The nacelle contains

the key components
of the wind turbine,
including the
gearbox, and the
electrical generator.
ANEMOMETER AND WIND VANE

The anemometer
and the wind
wane are used to
measure the
speed and the
direction of the
wind.
CONTROLLER

The electronic
controller contains a
computer which
continuously
monitors the
condition of the wind
turbine and controls
the yaw mechanism.
GEAR BOX

The gearbox has the

low speed shaft to the
left. It makes the high-
speed shaft to the right
turn approximately 50
times faster than the
low speed shaft.
LOW-SPEED SHAFT

The low speed shaft of

the wind turbine
connects the rotor hub
to the gearbox.
ROTOR

Blades and hub

together form the
rotor.
BLADES

The rotor
blades capture the
wind and transfer its
power to the rotor
hub.
PITCH SYSTEM

Turns (or pitches)

blades out of the
wind to control the
rotor speed, and to
keep the rotor from
turning in winds that
are too high or too
low to produce
electricity.
BRAKE

Stops the rotor

mechanically, electrically,
or hydraulically, in
emergencies.
YAW DRIVE

Orients upwind turbines

to keep them facing the
wind when the
direction changes.
Downwind turbines
don't require a yaw
drive because the wind
manually blows the
rotor away from it.
YAW MOTOR

Yaw Motor powers the

yaw drive.

HORIZONTAL AXIS WIND TURBINE

A horizontal axis wind turbine has its blades rotating on an axis parallel to the ground.

A vertical axis wind turbine has its blades rotating on an axis parallel perpendicular the ground.
