What is Research ?

Research is a Systematic approach for


purposeful investigation about some
information or knowledge.
Need for Research

Research is needed when there is some


information or knowledge gap about the
subject means in case there is adequate
knowledge or information about the subject,
there is no need to carryout the research
work.
Purpose for Research

The Purpose of research is to provide


suitable recommendations or suggestions
based on findings i.e. information or
knowledge acquired through research work.
Scope for Research

Scope of Research is spread over across all


the functional area viz. Marketing, HR,
Finance , IT, Science, Engineering,
humanity , applied sciences, arts i.e. each
and every walk of life.
Categories of Research
Broadly there are two categories of
Research work:
Category 1: Research which helps in
planning or decision making e.g. Social
research, Marketing Research, Socio
economic research.
Category 2: Research which helps in
system designing e.g. Technical Research
or scientific research
Types of Research
There are various parameters to classify
research work. Few of them are as follows:

Type 1: Descriptive Vs. Analytical


Type 2: Applied Vs. Fundamental
Type 3: Quantitative Vs. Qualitative
Type 4: Conceptual Vs. Empirical
Characteristics of Research
Following are few basic characteristics of a
research work:
• Means of obtaining information –
unbiased and reliable
• Experience and skills of researcher
• Objectives of the research problem to
be studied
• The time and money available for the
research work
