Who is Vlad the Impaler and What

is his Connection to Count Dracula

Vlad the Impaler

● He was born 1431 in Transylvania


● "Because the castle is in the mountains in this foggy area and it looks
spooky, it's what one would expect of Dracula's castle," Curta said.
"But he (Vlad III) never lived there. He never even stepped foot there."
● Vlad was held in prison with his brother and father by Ottoman Sultan
Murad II.
● Vlad learned in some arts of war: horsemanship and swordsmanship.
● Some say that Vlad learned the art of impalement while he was in
prison.
● His father was in war with the Turkish Ottoman Empire, and lost
● When Vlad came back to Transylvania he saw that his father and
brother had been assassinated.
Count Dracula
● Bram Stoker’s character, Dracula, is a Transylvanian Count with
a castle located high above a valley perched on a rock with a
flowing river below in the Principality of Transylvania

● Bram Stoker was thought to have based his character upon the

historical figure Vlad Tepes, ruler of Wallachia in the 15th

century.

● Bram Stoker has no references to Vlad within his notes or

anything that can be linked to Vlad specifically from the novel.

● Bram Stoker was born Nov. 8, 1847, Clontarf, County


Dublin, Ire.—died April 20, 1912, London, Eng, Irish
writer best known as the author of the Gothic horror
tale Dracula.
● Bram Stoker could not stand or walk until he was
seven
● Stoker outgrew his weakness to become an outstanding
athlete and football (soccer) player at Trinity College
(1864–70) in Dublin, where he earned a degree in
mathematics.
● His masterpiece, Dracula, appeared in 1897.
