1. Context
• Prof. J. M. Shah was the Head Of the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.
• Principle of that college give him a responsibility of purchase a new boiler
for their laboratory before the 1 July, the following year, the date of
commencement of the next academic year.
• Prof. Shah would have like to say that he had never bought even a pair of
socks for himself, but only said: "it will be a bit difficult, but I will try, sir."
2. Strategies
• Prof. Shah start listened with rapt attention to every visitor without
making any commitment.
• He took extensive notes and started asking searching questions.
• Prof. Shah diligently read all the literatures, his notes and also consulted
the maintenance stuff.
