MUSIC OF CAMBODIA
It is derived from a mesh of culture
traditions dating back to the ancient
Khmer Empire, India, China and the
original indigenous tribes living in the
area before the arrival of Indian and
Chinese travellers.

as well as Hindu forms.

SKOR THOM
• Two big drums (similar to taiko drums of japan)
played with drumsticks (membranophone).
• They typically have buffalo skin heads,
and are played in pairs. The drums are
tuned such that one will give a bright
sound when struck, while the others
gives a lower and more flat tone.
ONEAT
• Lead high pitched bamboo

• A double-headed drum
played with hands
(membranophone).
• The player of the samphor
leads the pinpeat setting the
tempo and beat.
KONGVONG
• There are 16 gong heads which
cover a range of pitches.
• They are rounded and flat in shape
with a raised knob in the middle,
known as the “nipple”
CHHING
• Ching are bowl-shape about 5
centimeters in diameter, and made of
bronze alloy, iron, copper, and gold.
• They are stuck together in a cyclical
pattern to keep time and regulate the
melody, and they function as the
“timekeeper "of the ensemble
