WCDMA

• Evolved from the CDMA radio access

scheme, WCDMA is a Wideband Direct-
Sequence CDMA (DS-CDMA) system.

Difference between CDMA & WCDMA

?
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CDMA & WCDMA

• Original DS-CDMA systems, like IS-95, used a carrier

bandwidth of about 1 MHz. These systems are referred to
as Narrowband CDMA systems.

• In contrast, WCDMA is a CDMA based access scheme,

which uses the DS-SS spreading technique with a carrier
bandwidth of around 5MHz.

• The higher carrier bandwidth makes WCDMA a wideband

system.
