Buddhist Philosophy

 The Buddha’s main concern was to eliminate

suffering, to find a cure for the pain of human
existence.
 His first teaching, the Four Noble Truths, follows
this pattern
 "life is dukkha.“
 pain of life is caused by ‘tanha’
 a complete release from attachment and dukkha is possible
 how to attain this liberation;

Buddha is said to have assumed an unsympathetic attitude

toward speculative thought in general.
The founder of the religion, Gautama Buddha,
permitted women to join his
monastic community and fully participate in it,
although there were certain provisos or
garudhammas.
 The traditional view of women in Early Buddhism is that they are
inferior
  Bahudhātuka-sutta that there could never be a female Buddha.
 While Buddhism regards the celibate monastic life as the higher
ideal, it also recognizes the importance of marriage as a social
institution“
 Buddha inaugurated a campaign for the liberation of Indian
womanhood. But he did succeed in creating a minor stir against
Brahman dogma and superstition.
 In Buddhism, unlike Christianity and Hinduism, marriage is not a
sacrament. It is purely a secular affair and the monks do not
participate in it
 Today, when the role of Women in Society is an issue of
worldwide interest it is opportune that we should pause to
look at it from a Buddhist perspective.
 Buddhism has saved the daughter from indignity, elevated
the wife to a position approximating to equality and retrieved
the widow from abject misery.
 secular nature of the marriage contract, the facility to
divorce, the right to remarry, the desegregation of the sexes
and above all else the right to inherit, own and dispose of
property without let or hindrance from the husband, have all
contributed to the alleviation of the lot of women in Buddhist
societies.
Woman And Buddhism Today
“ Warfare has traditionally been carried out primarily
The Dalai Lama by men, since they seem better physically
spoke at a equipped for aggressive behavior. Women, on the
conference on other hand, tend to be more caring and more
Women in sensitive to others’ discomfort and pain. Although
Buddhism at the men and women have the same potentials for
University of aggression and warm-heartedness, they differ in
Hamburg in which of the two more easily manifests. Thus, if
2007: the majority of world leaders were women,
perhaps there would be less danger of war and
more cooperation on the basis of global concern –
although, of course, some women can be difficult! I
sympathize with feminists, but they must not
merely shout. They must exert efforts to make
positive contributions to society.
Buddhism and Business
 The alleviation of suffering is the basis of the Buddha's first teaching,
The Four Noble Truths. This talk, or sutra, is organized like a medical
prescription. It addresses all forms of illness and imbalance - all
suffering - not just one illness or another. The four noble truths say that
suffering exists everywhere, that it has a cause, that it can be cured,
and that there is a remedy in the practices of balance and awareness.
 How does this idea of suffering apply to businesses? Businesses suffer
in much the same way that people do. Here are some examples:
 - Businesses fail; people die.
 - Some businesses run inefficiently, wasting time and money; some
people get sick.
 - Some business work environments are full of conflict; some people
and families are, too.
 - Businesses often have wonderful products or services, but can't get
them to market; people often have wonderful dreams, but can't make
them real.
Managing Stress

 Stress is primarily caused by external triggers

and how we deal and process it depends upon
our constitution and temperament
