ASTM Standards for Chemical and Steel Industries

The document discusses ASTM standards and their importance. ASTM has partnered with the global chemical industry for over 100 years, developing standards that support research, production, environmental safety, and thousands of finished products. Key ASTM steel standards discussed include A36, A529, A501, which specify requirements for structural steel profiles, plates, bars, and tubes. The standards help ensure structures are built safely and reliably by establishing quality and performance benchmarks.

ASTM Chemical Standards: Supporting Science, Innovation and

Quality Manufacturing

The global chemical industry and ASTM International have partnered

for more than 100 years. Today, ASTM standards contribute to
research, production, and environmental safety and to thousands of
finished products manufactured from rubber, plastics, and raw
materials.

standards and the
value of ASTM”.
•ASTM 2006 objectives
approved by the Board.
ASTM Standards

• ASTM standards are used by individuals, companies and other

institutions around the world. Purchasers and sellers incorporate
standards into contracts; scientists and engineers use them in
their laboratories and offices; architects and designers use them
in their plans; government agencies around the world reference
them in codes, regulations and laws; and many others refer to
them for guidance.
ASTM Standars

• Standards approved by the ASTM

for hot-rolled plates and profiles
are A36, A529, A572, A242, A588,
A709, A514, A813, A913 and A992.
The A709 standard is special, it
defines suitable steels for the
construction of bridges.
A36 Steel

• A36 steel is a common structural steel in the United States.

A36 is produced in a wide variety of forms, including:
• Plates
• Structural Shapes
• Bars
• Sheets
• Girders
• Angle iron
• T iron
ASTM A36. This standard is applicable to a wide
variety of hot-rolled structural profiles and to plates
of the same quality that are still available in the
market. It has a yield stress of 2 530 kg / cm2 (250
MPa, 36 ksi) and a minimum tensile stress of 4 080 kg
/ cm2 at 5 620 kg / cm2 (400 to 550 MPa, 58 to 80 ksi),
and its weldability is adequate. It has been developed
for many years in the United States for the
manufacture of riveted, bolted and welded structures,
improving the carbon content of the steels available
at that time, such as the ASTM A7. With the
innovation of this type of steel, the welded
connections began to displace the rivets that soon
disappeared.
ASTM A529. ASTM A529 is very commonly used in the construction of
steel buildings, it is also a common steel grade in bars and profiles.
Basic A529 steel includes grade 50 for profiles of groups 1 and 2 of
the ASTM; plates up to one inch thick and 12 inches wide (25x300
mm) and bars up to 2 1/2 in (64 mm) thick. The minimum Fy and Fu
stresses are 42 and 60-85 ksi (2 950 and 4 220 to 5 975 kg / cm2).
• ASTM A501. For practical purposes The A501 is similar to the A36 steel.
It is used for HSS tubes of circular, square and rectangular section.
Why are ASTM standards so important?

• In today's building industries, the stress is on

secure, long lasting, low maintenance goods, which
natural stone prospects the list within the minds of
designers and architects, and customers worldwide.
• These requirements also function as benchmarks for
quality limitations of merchandise. If a stone with a
below-minimum flexural strength is used for a
lintel, then it may be more likely to fail, thus
causing damage and possible injury. Internal or
external floor coverings or paving having an inferior
slide level of resistance level will more likely
trigger slipping mishaps in public or private tasks.
