3G limitations and LTE response

LTE Architecture
LTE Architecture
 LTE encompasses the evolution of:
• the radio access through the E-UTRAN
•the non-radio aspects under the term System Architecture
Evolution (SAE)
 Entire system composed of both LTE and SAE is called the
Evolved Packet System (EPS)
 At a high-level, the network is comprised of:
•Core Network (CN), called Evolved Packet Core (EPC) in SAE
• access network (E-UTRAN)
 A bearer is an IP packet flow with a defined QoS between the
gateway and the User Terminal (UE)
 CN is responsible for overall control of UE and establishment of
the bearers
LTE Architecture
 Main logical nodes in EPC are:
•PDN Gateway (P-GW)
•Serving Gateway (S-GW)
•Mobility Management Entity (MME)
 EPC also includes other nodes and functions, such:
•Home Subscriber Server (HSS)
•Policy Control and Charging Rules Function (PCRF)
 EPS only provides a bearer path of a certain QoS, control of
multimedia applications is provided by the IP Multimedia
Subsystem (IMS), which considered outside of EPS
 E-UTRAN solely contains the evolved base stations, called
eNodeB or eNB

LMPT(LTE main processing and transmission unit)

Functions
 The board performs the function of main control, clock signal transmission, message
exchange and GPS signal
 It provides two FE/GE adaptive RJ45 ports and two FE/GE SFP ports
Configuration
 One LMPT module is configured
Redundancy support
 1+1 backup, when one card is faulty, another card can restart within 2 minutes
LBBP(LTE Baseband processing unit)

Functions
 LBBP processes baseband signal implements the function of PHY and MAC layers and
supports the CPRI(common public radio interface)
 On LBBP is designed to support 3*20MHz 2T2R/1*20MHz 4T4R or 6*10 MHz
2T2R/3*10 MHz 4T 4R sectors.
Configuration
 1-6 LBBP can be configured, depending on the actual channel bandwidth per sector
Redundancy support
 LBBP supports cell level resource backup, that is, when one LBBP is out of work one cell
will be out of work

KPI system overview
Service
KPI attained approach

1) By Statistics/Counter

 Most of KPI’s are attained by this approach, such as RRC success

rate,HHO success rate.

2) By drive test/stationary test

 Some of KPI’s should be attained by drive test, such as attach latency

,Handover latency.
Accessibility

 It includes RRC,S1 and E-RAB establishment

 Reasons of poor accessibility include but are not limited to:-
• Poor coverage. In this case, qRxLevMin can be decreased.
• UE camping in the wrong cell. In this case, parameters for cell reselection can be tuned
• High UL interference
• Admission reject, due to lack of licenses

RRC connection establishment(UE connected mode from Idle mode)

S1 Signaling Connection Establishment
Retainability
 It includes E-RAB Release Rate[drops/s] & Call setup complete rate.
 Reasons for poor Retainability include but are not limited to:
•Missing neighbor relations
•Poor radio conditions
•Badly tuned handover parameters
•Admission reject, due to lack of licenses
UE Session Time
It shows the accumulated active session time in a cell for the measurement period.

Number of session seconds aggregated for UEs in a cell. A UE is said to be ‘in session’ if any data on a DRB
(UL or DL) has been transferred during the last 100 ms
