HUMORAL IMMUNE

RESPONSES
DR. DEDY SUTRIYATNO
 NAIVE LYMPOCYTEa mature B or T lymphocyte that has not previously
encountered antigen or is not the progeny of an antigen-stimulated mature
lymphocyte.
 COMPLEMENT SYSTEMa collection of plasma proteins that are activated by
microbes & by antibodies attached to microbes & whose function as effector
mechanisms of host defenses
• Mediated by antibodies
• The arm of the adaptive immune response that functions to neutralize
& eliminate extracellular microbes & microbial toxins
• Important in defending against polysaccharide & lipid toxins
• B cell recognize antigen but do not secrete antibodies, activation of
these cells stimulates their differentiation into antibody-secreting
plasma cells
• Naive B cells express IgM & IgD
• 1 naive B cells4000 plasma cells1012 antibodies per day
• Heavy chain isotype switching
• Affinity maturation

• Play an important role in B cell activation &

induce heavy chain isotype switching & affinity
T- DEPENDENT maturation
• In the absence of T cell help, protein antigen
elicit weak or no antibody responses.

• Show relatively little heavy chain isotype

T- INDEPENDENT
switching & affinity maturation
ANTIGEN-INDUCED SIGNALING IN B CELLS

 Antigen-induced clustering of membrane Ig receptors triggers biochemical

signals that are transduced receptor-associated signaling moleculse
 THE MECHANISMS ARE SAME AS IN T CELLS
