Multimedia Overview
Multimedia – “multi” means more, many and “media” is a form of
communication.
- is any form of communication that uses more than one media element.
- refers to computer-based materials designed to be used on a computer.
- it is capable of integrating the four basic skills of listening, speaking,
reading, and writing.
- originally used to describe learning materials that consisted of book,
audio cassette and video cassette.

History of Multimedia
• Newspaper – is the longest form of multimedia.
- It uses various elements such as text, graphics and images.
• 1970s – microcomputers – incapable of playing or recording sound and
video.
- They had very limited graphics capabilities.
• 1980’s – various method was employed like linking audiocassette to
computer that controlled playback and rewind functions.
- Videodisc player to a computer it was possible produce CAI
(Computer Assisted Instructions)
