THE SPINAL CORD

45 cm. Long - nervous link between brain and

the rest of the body and some activities
independent of brain - spinal reflexes
FUNCTIONS: 1) communication link between
brain and peripheral nervous system inferior
to head
2) Producing responses through reflex
mechanisms
CROSS SECTION OF SPINAL CORD

Gray Matter is inside and white matter is outside

Composition of Gray Matter:
• Posterior gray horns - somatic and visceral
sensory nuclei
• Anterior gray horns – somatic motor nuclei
• Lateral gray horns – found in thoracic and
lumbar segments – visceral motor nuclei
• Gray commisures
Composition of White Matter: 3 columns or
tracts (anterior, posterior, lateral)
Formed by sensory fibers - ascending to
brain and motor nerve fibers descending
from brain and fibers of connector neurons
SPINAL NERVES
• 31 pairs of spinal nerves
• All are mixed nerves having motor and
sensory nerves
• Covered with connective tissues:
epineurium, perineurium and endoneurium
PERIPHERAL DISTRIBUTION OF
SPINAL NERVES
• DERMATOME: specific bilateral region e skin
surface monitored by a single pair of spinal
nerves
