What is Piriformis Syndrome ?
• Piriformis syndrome is a
condition in which the piriformis
muscle compress sciatic nerve
can make buttock pain, numbness,
and tingling along the back of
the leg and into the foot.
• The piriformis muscle is a small
muscle located deep in the
buttock (behind the gluteus
maximus).
What are Causes of Piriformis Syndrome ?

• The exact causes of piriformis syndrome are unknown.


• Suspected causes include:
– Muscle spasm in the piriformis muscle
– Tightening of the muscle, in response to injury or
spasm
– Swelling of the piriformis muscle, due to injury or
spasm
– Bleeding in the area of the piriformis muscle
What are Symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome ?

1. Large painful knot or cramp in


buttocks

How Intramuscular Injection Procedure for Patient with
Piriformis Syndrome?

1. The doctor give information to patient about intramuscular injection for piriformis syndrome.
The medicine are Lidocain 4 ml and flamicort 40 mg. The contains of flamicort is
triamcinolone acetonide.
2. If the patient agrees with that procedure, the patient signs the informed consent
3. The nurse instruct the patient to lie with face downwards
4. The nurse asked the patient to lower his pants down
5. The doctor uses guideline ultrasound for finded piriformis muscle
6. After the piriformis muscle is finded, the drug is directly injected with 2 ampoules lidocain
and 40mg flamicort using syringe 5 cc and spinal needle 20/22G
7. After the drug is injected, the patient's legs are legs bent and stretched by doctor
8. The patient is instructed by doctor to walk on the spot for drug to spread
9. Initially the patient will feel numbness along his legs, after which the condition will return
as before and the pain will be reduced.
