Course content
Basic concepts, strategies and applications of the art of Molecular Biology

Part I: The basis of molecular biology


(the flow of genetic information; structure, isolation and quantification of
nucleic acids; gel electrophoresis; nucleic acids hybridization; DNA
sequencing; restriction enzymes; overview of recombinant DNA technology;
chemical syntheses of nucleic acids)

Part II: The methodologies of gene manipulation


(host cells and vectors; cloning strategies; Polymerase Chain Reaction; site-
directed mutagenesis; selection and analysis of recombinants)

Part III: Applications of molecular biology


(making and altering proteins in different expression systems; medical and
forensic applications; transgenic plants and animals; animal cloning; ethical
aspects)
Grading criteria:

I Quiz: 30 marks
