 Ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh.

DISPUTED TERRITORY
 India approaches UN to end territorial dispute.
 UN agrees to India's demand, tells Pakistan to
withdraw forces from Jammu & Kashmir.
 The UN tell people of Kashmir to join either India or
Pakistan through a process called “referendum or
plebiscite”.
 Due to its unresolved nature regarded as a “Disputed
Territory”.
 Several UN resolution calling India or Pakistan to
allow a UN administered plebiscite
VOILENCE CONTINUES IN KASHMIR
 Pakistan does not accept Kashmir as a part of India.

 Pakistan is trying to keep the violence alive in


Kashmir.

 And the people who suffer are the people of Jammu


& Kashmir.
CURRENT ISSUES
 100 lives claimed in the last three months.
 Schools and colleges remain closed.
 People and children are killed.
 Shopian rape and murder in 2009.
 Armed Force Special Power Act(AFSPA).
 People killed and young boys arrested.
 Nine year old boy killed in the district of Sapore by
CRPF men.
DEMAND BY KASHMIRIS
 Withdrawal of security forces from Jammu and
Kashmir.

 Restoration of autonomy.

 Withdrawal of the “Armed force special power act”.


INITIATIVES TAKEN BY INDIAN
GOVERNMENT
 An all-party delegation sent to Kashmir to meet the
leaders and to know reason for unrest.

 An 8 point initiative is put forward by the


government of India.
8 POINT INITIATIVE
 Group of interlocutors appointed to hold meeting
with all sections of society.
 State government would be advised to release all
student and youth arrested in stone pelting.
 Review the public safety act and to withdraw
detention in appropriate cases.
 Ex-gratia relief of 5 lakhs to be granted to families.

 Review the deployment of security forces and the


notification of the area as disturbed areas.
 Appointment of special task forces for Ladakh and
Jammu to examine development in these areas.
 State government requested to reopen all schools,
colleges and universities and to take special classes if
necessary, to ensure exams to be conducted for the year.
 Grant of Rs 100 crores for development of school
colleges and infrastructure.
