What is Maize?
 Maize, also known as corn, is a cereal grain first domesticated by indigenous
people in southern Mexico about 10.000 years ago.

 It’s made by it’s leafy stalk that produces pollen inflorences and separates
ovuliferous inflorences called ears that yields kernels or seeds, which are
fruits.

 This plant has become a staple food in many parts of the world, with the total
production of maize surpassing that of wheat and rice. However, little of this
production is for human consumption, most is used for corn-related products.
Food Uses
 Maize is central to Mexican food. Virtually every dish in Mexican cuisine uses
maize. In the form of grain or cornmeal (ground dried maize), maize is the
primary ingredient of tortillas, tamales, pozole, atole and all the dishes based
on them, like tacos, quesadillas, etc.

 Chicha and Chicha morada are drinks typically made of particular types of
maize.

 Popcorn consist of kernels of certain varieties that explode when heated, it is


a common snack in cinemas.
