Independent Novel Checkpoint #2

The Hunger Games

Amnesty(Article 5)
“‘Someone who committed a crime. They cut her tongue so
she can’t speak,’ says Haymitch. ‘She’s probably a traitor of
some sort. Not likely you’d know her”(Collins. 23-24)

Amnesty is helping people with arbitrary arrest, torture and

other forms of poor treatment. They are calling for no
torture and fair trials. In the Hunger Games this would help
all the Avoxes. The Avoxes are suffering cruel punishment
for speaking out against them. If someone speaks out
against the capitol they cut their tongue for punishment, no
trial, just this unfair punishment. This punishment from the
capitol breaks article 5 of the UDHR
Equality Now
(Article 1)
“Days of hunting and gathering for this one meal and even
then it would be a poor substitution for the Capitol version.
What must it be like, I wonder, to live in a world where food
appears at the press of a button?”(Collins, 64)

Article 1 of the UDHR states that all humans are born

equal. In the Hunger Games the theme of inequality is
prominent and is talked about often. The districts in the
book are not equal, Equality Now can help. Equality Now
fights for legal changes and helps make the world more
equal. This organisation can help the poorer districts and
push for law changes from the capitol.
Article 19 (Article
19)
“When I was younger, I scared my mother to death, the
things I would blurt out about District 12, about the people
who rule our country, Panem, from the far-off city called
the Capitol. Eventually I understood this would only lead us
to more trouble. So I learned to hold my tongue and to turn
my features into an indifferent mask so that no one could
ever read my thoughts.”(Collins, 6)
In the Hunger Games people being silenced is very
prominent. The citizens of Panem are forced to censor
themselves about the capitol in fear of being killed or
turned into an avox. This violates Article 19 of the UDHR.
Organisation Article 19 fights for the rights of people being
silenced. They give people access to information, help
fight censorship, and most importantly fight for freedom of
religion or belief. Article 19 can help the biggest issue in
The Hunger Games that is the Capitol controlling the
people of Panem.
