MINDORO
• It is the seventh largest island of the
Philippines home to the indigenous tribe,
the Hanunuo-Mangyans.
HANUNUO-MANGYAN
• Mangyan is the generic name for all the indigenous
groups that live in the island of Mindoro. The name
Hanunuo is used to describe the Mangyans who
have remained faithful to theeir traditions and have
kept their customs free from foreign influences.
Their traditional system of writing called the Sanskirt
has allowed them to express themselves in the
poetry song called ambahan.
AMBAHAN
• The ambahan is a poem and a song chanted by
the Hanunuo- Mangyans. It is derived from the
word amba meaning “invocation to the spirit”. The
ambahan is used to express embarrassing and
unpleasant experiences as well as delicate issues
that cannot be directly said. It is considered very
personal. The ambahan is transmitted from one
generation to another. Ambahans are written to
celebrate the lives of Mangyans from birth to
death, it also describes their courtship, marriage,
old age, sickness, food, work travel, and even
hospitality.

• The musical events and activities in
Mindoro are well attended and
participated in by both men and
women. Musical instruments like the
gitgit, kudyapiq, gongs and wind
instrrument are used to accompany
their songs and dances.
