Western Railway and its important Information

• A local is simply a suburban commuter train, usually one that stops at all stations
en route.
• Total Number of trains running daily from Churchgate - 430
• Every 3 minutes, one train/rake leaves Churchgate Station
• Average 5000 passenger in 12 coach, and 3500 passenger in 9 coach train
• Approx. 43 lakh passengers travel on Western Railway daily
• Around 191suburban trains.
• Churchgate to Virar distance 64 kms; average time to complete the journey = 1 ½
hrs.
• Local or suburban drivers of EMUs, DMUs, etc. are classified as Motormen
are considered on par with the A grade drivers in terms of the hierarchy.
• Motor Man Average one days duty is 4 ½ Hours Daily – 104 hours
Fortnightly.
• One Motorman can take average 2 round trips in a day.
• Total Motorman strength in Western Railway – 398.
• 80% Motorman sign in and sign out at Churchgate Station for duty.
• 20% Motorman duty starts from other destination, and ends at other
destination.
• 10% Motorman are kept on bench and used in case of contingencies.
• Motorman in waiting, or on bench are paid regular salary.
• Motorman timing change every 6 month, reporting time is 45 min before train
schedule.
CREW MANAGEMENT
CALCULATING CREW REQUIREMENT

Running staff review should be carried out after every Six Months

30% leave reserve and 10 % trainee reserve is demanded for this additional
requirement.

Train timings to be checked from the latest timetable.

Links to be prepared before promulgation of new time table.

Min. home station rest should be:


 If duty performed in the last trip is less than 8 hrs., then 12 hrs
 If duty is 8 hrs. or more. than 16 hrs
 If staff is required to work on trains/rakes for extended time, or take
less then stipulated rest time, then breach of rest allowance is payable
to running staff.

SIGNAL MANAGEMENT

 Two-aspect colour-light Signaling

 Higher one is Green and the Lower one is Red

 Three-aspect colour-light Signaling

 Top one Green, Middle one Yellow, Bottom one is


Red

 Four Aspect Colour Light Signaling

 Adds another Yellow Lamps to the Three Aspect

SIGNAL MANAGEMENT
 Track Indication Circuits

 Automatic sensory switches are located under the tracks,


and the location of the train is indicated in the control
room.

 Signal Indications Circuits

 Once a train passes, the signaling system automatically


relays the positional information of each rake passing
through a section.

 Point Indications Circuits

 In case of any contingencies or accident on a particular


track then the point indication goes for re-routing the
following trains/rakes to another track.

General Order of Precedence of Trains:

1. ARME, ART proceeding to the site of accident.


2. President’s and VVIP’s specials (Unless otherwise specified in the Time Table).
3. Suburban train during peak hours in rush direction/routes.
4. Super fast trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani etc.
5. Mail / Express trains.
6. Military personnel special, if instructed by emergency control/DOM.
7. Fast Passenger train
8. Special engaged by the public. (Precedence order may be revised)
9. Passenger trains.
10. Mixed trains.
11. Military stores special.
12. Express or special goods train.
13. Through goods train.
14. Accident relief train returning from the site of accident (unless otherwise ordered).
15. Shunting and van goods train.
16. Departmental trains.
Train Management
Reason for Train Stoppage

1.Scheduled Stopping
a. Approx. 5 min on reaching the destination
b. Minimum 8 to 10 seconds on each station
c. At Kalyan > 1 min.

2.Unscheduled Stopping
a. Signals
b. Accidents
c. Chain pulling

Maintenance of Suburban Trains

1.Periodic Overhauling (POH)


• Once in 3 month Oiling, bearing and complete checking of rake done
2.Regular Overhauling (ROH)
• Once in a month Oiling done.
