Adenovirus

AP Biology
Specific Name & Family

• A member of the family Adenoviridae

• Derived from adenoids
Transmission

• Can spread around similarly like the common cold

• Person-to-person via sneezing and/or coughing
• Can also be transmitted through contact w/ any object having the
adenovirus
Infection

• Infection can occur by the viral genome being transcribed in the

nucleus, mRNA is translated in the cytoplasm, and virions self-
assemble in the nucleus.
• The viral DNA is integrated into the host genome. Virus-host DNA
recombinants can also be found in the infection
• Its vectors can be replication-defective; certain viral genes are
deleted and replaced.
Symptoms

• Common cold syndrome

• Pneumonia
• Croup
• Bronchitis
• Diarrhea
Diseases

• Gastroenteritis
• Conjunctivitis
• Cystitis
• Rash illness
Epidemiology

• Adenovirus can be very common during late winter, spring, and

early summer
• It is also very possible for it to occur throughout the year, depending on the
person and environmental situation.
Treatment

• No FDA-approved agents for treatment of adenovirus for the

general public
• Only clinically approved antiviral agent is cidofovir
