Abnormal collection of serous fluid in tunicavaginalis
Hydrocele Classification
Primary Secondary

• Defective absorption of fluid • Excessive production of fluid withinthe sac


• 4 types: Vaginal • Eg: Filiarisis, tumour, trauma, epididymo-orchitis
: Infantile
: Congenital
: Hydrocele of thecord

• Attain moderate to bigsize • Attain small size


• Difficult to palpatetestis • Testis easily palpable
• Tranillumination +ve • Transillumination -ve
• Tx : Jaboulay's & Lord'soperation • Tx: Treat underlying cause
Hydrocele : Treatment
Non-surgical “Watch and Wait” Reassurance for small hydrocele but
malignancy must be excluded by US of
testis

Aspiration under USG To relieve symptoms the fluid can


reaccumulates within a week

Surgical Lord's plication

Jaboulay's operation
Complications:
• Haematoma (due to minor trauma duringsurgery)

• Calcification of the sacwall

• Haematocele (usually results from vessel damage


during needle drainage of a hydrocele)

• Rupture of hydrocele sac (trauma/spontaneous) RARE
