 Phytochemical Analysis refers to the extraction,
screening and identification of the medically
active substances found in plants.
 Some of the bioactive substances that can be
derived from plants are Flavanoids, Alkaloids,
antioxidants, Carotenoids, tannin and phenolic
compounds.
 This phytochemical analysis is done on the
Biophytum sensitivum, which is also known as
little tree.
 It is used as traditional folk medicine in ailments
such as inflammations, arthritis, wounds , tumors
,burns ,asthma ,diabetes ,stomach ache and
snake bite.
 Kingdom:Plantae
 Phylum: Tracheophyta
 Class:Magnoliopsida
 Order:Oxalidales
 Family:Oxalidaceae
 Genus:Biophytum
 Species:B.sensitivum

 Here we did project on the phytochemical

analysis of Biophytum sensitivum
MATERIALS
&
METHODS
The beaker is covered by a plastic cover,
putting some holes on the top of the cover.
After 2 days, this mixture is made to heat on
the water bath for 5-10 mints. Then it is
made to cool down. The solution is taken out,
by squeezing the mixture with a dry cloth.
Then the solution is taken and stored in a
glass bottle. For mixing the dry extracts in
water ,it does not need to keep it for 2 days.
Then the various tests which include
Test for Flavanoids,Ninhydrin
Test,2%HCl,Benedict’s Test,Marquies
TEST,10% FeCl3,5% FeCl3,Killer-Killani
Test, and Biuret Test ,are done using
the extracts,both fresh and dry
mixtures.
We understood the presence of
chemicals by the colour change shown
in its various tests. The following table
shows the result that are given by
both fresh and dry extracts on both
acetone and water. Let’s have a look.

We did this project to find out the
presence of chemicals in the plant
Biophytum sensitivum. And we have found the
presence of Flavanoids,Tannins,Phenol and
Protein on Biophytum sensitivum. We also get
more information about the plant Biophytum
sensitivum.
We are thankful to our supervising
lecturer Therese Miss,Jyothi Miss and our
HOD Joby Sir for their full support throughout
the project.
