more breathing space to
express one’s writing style.
Top tips for writing feature
articles
1. Focus on human interest.
2. Be clear about why you are writing the article. Is it to
inform, persuade, observe, evaluate, or evoke emotion?
3. Keep your audience clearly in mind - what are their desires,
what really matters to them?
4. Use drama, emotion, quotations, questions, descriptions.
5. Use anecdotes and direct quotes to tell the story - try not to
use too many of your own words.
6. Decide on the ‘tense' of your story at the start and stick to
it. Present tense usually works best.
7. Avoid lengthy, complex paragraphs. Your article will appear
in columns, so one or two sentences equals a paragraph.

Time was when the classroom teacher was known to be cranky,

bespectacled and elderly maestro who seldom smiled. Hers was nothing
but discipline, which to her was almost an obsession.
Miss Julie Santos of our English class, has completely erased this
century-old concept and represents the new image of today’s modern,
blithe, and down-to-earth teacher.
Ma’am Julie is one who never sits in a corner. Neither does she
raise her voice, too, in anger. But she moves around gracefully with such
magnetic efficiency and boundless enthusiasm that her pupils can’t help
but study their lessons so as not to displease her.
A graduate of University of La Salette where she majored in
English, Miss Santos typifies the perfectionist who believes that every
student should be provided with well-rounded education.
Our favorite teacher has a knack for writing, too. She used to be
a regular contributor to the SALETTINIAN, the official organ of
University of La Salette.
No wonder, pupil journalists are very close to her heart.
