Safety
• In the definition stated by William W.
Lawrence safety is defined, as a thing is safe if
its risks are acceptable.
Condition of Safe Exit
• Assure when a product fails it will fail safely.
• Assure that the product can be abandoned
safely.
• Assure that the user can safely escape the
product
Emergency Exit
An emergency exit in a structure is a special
exit for emergencies such as a fire: the
combined use of regular and special exits
allows for faster evacuation, while it also
provides an alternative if the route to the
regular exit is blocked by fire, etc.
History
• Victoria Hall disaster in Sutherland,
England in 1883- 80 Children died
• Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in United
States in 1911 –146 factory workers died
• Cocoanut Grove fire in a Boston nightclub in
1942- 492 peoples died
• Republica Cromanon night club fire in Buenos
Aires, Argentina in 2004-194 peoples died
Exit Route
• An exit route is a continuous and unobstructed
path of exit travel from any point within a
workplace to a place of safety
Parts of Exit Route
• Exit access – portion of an exit route that leads
to an exit.
• Exit – portion of an exit route that is generally
separated from other areas to provide a
protected way of travel to the exit discharge.
• Exit discharge – part of the exit route that
leads directly outside or to a street, walkway,
refuge area, public way, or open space with
access to the outside.
