USED TO

We use ‘used to’ to talk about things happened in


the past-actions or states-that no longer happen
now.
 I used to eat meat but I became a
vegetarian 5 years ago
 I used to drive to work but now I take the
bus
 There used to be a cinema in the town but
now there isn’t.
There is no present tense equivalent of
‘used to’. The negative and intronegative
forms of used to are as follows :
 Did you use to exercise regulary?
 No, I didn’t use to exercise on a
regulary basis.
BE/GET USED TO
Be used to
if you are used to something, you
are accustomed to it-you find it
usual
 I’m used to living alone
 Don’t worry, John is used to
driving for long hours
Both ‘be used to’ and ‘get
used to’ are followed by noun
(or pronoun) or the gerund-
the ‘ing’ form of a verb. Be/get
used to’ can be used with
past, present ant future tenses.
Get used to
if you get used to something, you are becoming
accustomed to it-it was starnge, now it’s not strange.
It shows that something is in the process of
becoming normal.
 He doesn’t like that small town, but he’ll get used
to it
 Since the divorce, she has become very sad. But I
think she’ll get used to her new life
 I got used living in. Canada in spite of the cold
weater
