INTRODUCTION
 It is the mineral found in the
amino acid; Methionine,
Cysteine, Homocystine,
Taurine.
 It is also in the B vitamins,
thiamin and biotine.
 As a part of amino acids it is a
key structure of protien.
 It is third most abundant mineral
determined by percentage of total
body weight in an adult.
THE SULFUR CYCLE
1. Compounds containing sulfur are found
in all body cells and are indispensable for
life
2. The primary sulfur containing
compounds of interest in humans are:
 Methionine

 Cysteine

 Homocysteine

 Cystathione

 S-adenosylmethionine(SAMe)

 Taurine
 Biotin
 Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA)
 Coenzyme A
 Glutathione(GSH)
 Chondroitin sulfate
 Glucosamine sulfate
 Fibrinogen
 Heparin
 Metallothionein
 Inorganic sulfate
 α-keto-𝛾-CH3
 -thiobutyrate

 Methanethiol

 Thiamin

With the exception of the two sulfur

containing vitamins Thiamine and Biotin
all of these sulfur compounds are
synthesized from just one parent compound
methionine
In addition sulfur is needed for a number of
chemical reactions involved in metabolism
of drugs, steroids and xenobiotics
FOOD SOURCES
 Eggs

 Meat

 Fish

 Nuts

 Seeds

 Grains
RDA
DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS
 Reduced microbial synthesis
 Reduced fiber digestion due to slow
microbial growth in ruminants
 Slow growth

 Reduced milk production

 Weight loss

 Excessive salivation

 Death

 Unwillingness to eat
TOXICITY SYMPTOMS
 Reduced untakes
 Overloading the urinary system leading to
kidney failure
 Interference with nerve impulses
including blindness ,comma ,muscle
twiches and intestinal inflamation or
bleeding
FUNCTIONS
 Sulfur is an important part of
several amino acids (the building blocks
of protein), especially methionine and
cysteine.
 It helps the body resist bacteria

 Cleanses the blood

 Protects the protoplasm of cells

 Important in enzyme reactions

and protein synthesis.
