designer must make
clear in indicating
a weld:
 Type of weld
 Joint preparation
 Weld size
 Root size (if any)
Definitions:
 Weld symbol: A symbol that indicates
the type of weld.
 Welding symbol: A method of
representing the weld on drawings.
Elements of welding symbols
Indicating sides of a joint
 Arrow side: The side
of the joint indicated
by the welding
symbol arrow.
Sometimes called
the near side.
 Other side: The side
of the joint opposite
the arrow side.
Indicating location of weld
 A weld symbol below the reference line
indicates a weld on the arrow side
Indicating location of weld
 A weld symbol above the reference line
indicates a weld on the other side
Indicating location of weld
 Weld symbols on both sides of the
reference line indicate welds on both
sides of the joint
Contours obtained by welding
Multiple reference lines
