Character Analysis
The Mayor:
An experienced public servant, who has always received

bribes of all sorts. Yet, he has a sort of dignity and

self-pride. Despite his dishonesty and corruption, his

behavior is sensible and reasonable.

He is not talkative and has gone through hard and rough

times which left its marks on his face. The lines of

his face are hard and rough. His main concern is

never to lose anything that swims into his hands.

Because of his greed, he has become a tyrant. He

is motivated by the desire of grabbing whatever he

sets eyes on. Despite being tyrant, dishonest and

corrupted, he sometimes feels guilty. Then, he

finds relief in going to church .

His greatest aim in life is to be a General. He

treats his inferiors with pride and humiliates them.

But, at the same time, you find him so much humble and

treats his superiors modestly . This appears in the way

he treats the assumed General Inspector ,

Hlestakov. He finds no difficulty in bribing the General

Inspector.
Character Analysis
The Judge:
The character of Gogol , the Judge , ridicules

the cultured and educated people of Russia at that

time. Though he has only read five or six books in his

whole life, he behaves as if he were one of

the greatest thinkers of his time.

He speaks in a deep voice and gives his words great

weight. He is not afraid of the Mayor and

always opposes him. This appears when he

exposes the Mayor's sins by taking more expensive

bribes than the Mayor himself ; fur coats for his wife
and such things. Although he is

a corrupted person who takes bribes,

he defends himself saying that the bribes he

takes are puppies (little). He is fond of

hunting, and hangs the animals' skins in the

courthouse to dry.
His courthouse is full of rubbish . His clerk breeds

poultry in the waiting room and drinks alcohol.

He takes bribes and does not believe in God.

He never goes to church on Sundays.

Character Analysis

The Charity Commissioner:

He is a fat corrupted man. He is mean and dishonest. He,
as well as the doctor. They never give the simple
patients any expensive medicines. They believe insimple
natural ways; if the patients die, well they die, if
they get better, they will get better without taking
medicines..
He is hypocrite and this is shown when he gossips with
Hlestakov about the Judge, having affairs with Dob's wife
and about the SS putting evil into the minds of the young
students.
His character has also appeared to be corrupted when he
bribes the General Inspector, Hlestakov
Character Analysis
Anna Andreyeyna:
The Mayor's wife. A middle aged country coquette.
Her mind and education were partly
formed by reading novels and books.
She dominates (controls) her husband’s only trifling and
unimportant matters.
She is not less ambitious than her husband .
She dreams of traveling to Petersburg and having a new house
and new friends of higher rank.
She is empty headed and cares for nothing but trivial things ; like
whether the General Inspector has a mustache or not, and
the color of his eyes. She tries all the time to attract the attention
of the General Inspector.
Hlestakov:
A slim, skinny young man of about 28. He is a shallow, empty-
headed young man.
He loves drinking and gambling. On his way from
Petersburg to the country town where his family
lives, he has spent all his money on cards and is left
penniless. His debts mountain on until he is unable even
to get a cheap meal. .
Everyone in the district thinks that he is the Inspector;

hurries to him to show respect and loyalty. Even

the Mayor's wife and daughter race

to attract his attention. He is an opportunist and this appears in

making use of mistaking him for the General Inspector. He

takes bribes from manypeople pretending that those sums are only

loans, to be paid back as soon as he gets home in Saratov.

He has no morals as he tries to flirt the Mayor's wife and

daughter at the same time .

He is an extravagant and a showing off man. He always wants

the best of everything. He is not far-sighted and he plans

for nothing. He only lives day by day and never cares about

tomorrow. He seems to be a fool.
