DIAPHRAGM

• curved
musculofibrous
sheet that
separates the
thoracic from the
abdominal cavity
Attachments
and
Components
• The muscle can be
considered in three
parts
– sternal
– costal
– lumbar
Lateral Arcuate Ligament

• medial: front of
transverse process of
the first lumbar
vertebra
• lateral: lower margin
of the 12th rib
Medial Arcuate Ligament

• medial: continuous
with lateral tendinous
margin and is
attached to the side of
the body of the 1st
and 2nd lumbar
vertebra
• lateral: fixed to the
front of the transverse
process of first lumbar
vertebra
• the right crus arises
from anterolateral
surfaces of the bodies
and intervertebral
discs of the upper
three lumbar
vertebrae
• left crus arises from
corresponding parts
of the upper two
lumbar vertebrae
Relations
• superiorly:
– pleura, lungs(rest on
corresponding dome)
– heart, pericardium
(rest on central
tendon)
• inferiorly:
– liver(under the right
dome and central
tendon)
– stomach, spleen
(under left dome)
– right and left kidneys
(corresponding dome)
Apertures
Aortic Aperture

• lowest and most

posterior
• found at the level of
the lower border of
the twelfth thoracic
vertebra and
thoracolumbar
intervertebral disc
Esophageal Aperture

• located at the level of

the tenth thoracic
vertebra
• transmits esophagus,
gastric nerves,
esophageal branches
of the left gastric
vessels and some
lymphatic vessels
Vena Caval Aperture

• lies about the level of

the disc between
eight and ninth
thoracic vertebrae
• located at the junction
at the right leaf with
the central area of the
tendon
