Important background

 Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the Apollo space

program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft
was launched on April 11, 1970 from the Kennedy Space
Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an
oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the service
module (SM) upon which the command module (CM) had
depended. Despite great hardship caused by limited power,
loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the critical
need to make makeshift repairs to the carbon dioxide removal
system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17, 1970, six
days after launch.
What is the film about

This movie is based on a true story of the worst NASA tragedies.

In 1971, NASA plans to send out people to the moon for a lunar
mission. They have chosen three astronauts namely Jim Lovell,
Frad Haise, and Jack Swigert. The initial face of space mission
is successful, however a slight fault inside the space module
caused an explosion that turned the exploration into a test for
survival for the crew of Apollo 13. While Lovell, Haise, and
Swigert try to survive in space. The workers at NASA try to figure
out a way to get the astronauts home safely.

Explosion in oxygen tank
 Launch of Apollo 13

Apollo 13 launched on April 11, 1970, on schedule. While there

was a minor anomaly during liftoff, the liftoff was successful and
the mission proceeded normally for the first 56 hours.

 Oxygen Tank Failure

During a countdown demonstration test, a problem with the

oxygen tanks was on the Apollo shuttle was noted. Each of the
two oxygen tanks held 320 lbs. of oxygen. During the test, the
second tank did not empty properly.
 Oxygen Tank Exploded
After a television broadcast on April 14, the crew was asked
to power on the oxygen tank fans. They did so, and
approximately two minutes later, a loud pop or bang was
heard. Power fluctuated and communications with earth
went down briefly.

 CSM Power Down, LM Power Up

The oxygen tanks served not only to provide the crew with
air, but also as a key part of the power source for the
shuttle. With the oxygen tank failure, the crew was forced to
power down the command service module and uses the
lunar module as a lifeboat of sorts. Life support on the lunar
module was minimal, and only barely adequate.
Clearing out the carbon dioxide
 In response to a carbon dioxide buildup on the spacecraft, Mission
Control sent up a procedure for building a device to clear out the
dangerous gas. On April 15 at 8:21 a.m., the three astronauts finish
constructing their first carbon dioxide scrubber.

 Crew Rescued

Some 45 minutes after landing, the crew was rescued. All were
healthy, but one crew member had a urinary tract infection caused
by dehydration.
Lessons from the movie

Prioritize and Communicate:

 NASA didn’t worry about anything other than saving the crew.
The lunar landing objective was abandoned within minutes of the
initial explosion. And everyone on the gigantic NASA team
understood it.

Experience Takes Experience:

 There’s no substitute for hours and hours of actually doing
something. It’s the best preparation for catastrophe. NASA’s
people had been in the lunar-landing business for 9 years when
the explosion occurred aboard Apollo 13.
Assess and Manage Risk:
 When you are doing something as risky as sending people in sealed containers attached to
explosives into space, you’d better have pretty darn good risk management techniques.
NASA had to adjust on the fly (pun intended) during Apollo 13, but many of its improvisations
were worked out in advance because NASA had done a good job of identifying many of its
risks.

Teamwork
 Most important lesson Apollo 13 gives is the teamwork. The intensity with which the entire
team works is an inspiration. Be it - to get the command module up and running after the
major disaster they faced, or how the team builds a new filter with the items available in the
Lunar Module (Aquarius) and Command and Service Module (Odyssey). The entire team
works on a sleepless schedule to build a new procedure that brought them back home. An
astronaut getting replaced at the last minute (Ken), played a major role in building a new
procedure in a selfless manner to bring the astronauts back.
What are the opinions about the
movie

 The movie is all about a mission of NASA called “APOLLO

13”. Somewhat we can say it’s a dramatic kind of movie,
it’s a well directed movie and It is a success failure of
NASA .The movie is full show of managing the limited
resources available, a demonstration of perfect team
work and how we have to keep clam under high
pressure situation so that right decisions can be made. It
taught me that if everything seems going against you,
you cannot allow any thoughts of failure to enter your
minds and it proved that every problem has a solution.
 NIKHIL CHOUDHARY
 After watching the Apollo 13 movie, it is interesting to know that
this was a “Successful failure” of a project. This is due to the fact
that astronauts returned to Earth safely but they never made it to
the moon. After the crew headed for the moon they had to
disappointedly cancel the mission before it could be completed
and return to earth, when the oxygen tank that exploded caused
the spacecraft to malfunctioning.
 But with the help of presence of mind, team work & coordination
the crew landed safely on the earth.

 This was a very well-done true story of a space mission
that came extremely close to being a disaster, but the
astronauts made it home safely.
 Just the fact that this film is true makes it even more
enjoyable. It's hard to understand how in the hell one
can make it back to Earth and survive with a damaged
space-craft. It's even harder to appreciate just how
close they actually got to dying out there.

 The movie was so thrilling that , I was simply
compelled to watch it until the end. I already knew
how it ended so i was surprised it commanded my
attention so intensely. The fact is the characters were
all so realistically portrayed and the film was so
expertly directed that it was almost as if the Apollo 13
disaster was filmed and that is what i was watching.
Now this film is certainly not to everyone's taste, it is
quite slow in the build-up and the film relies almost
entirely on the script and ability of the cast

 Anurag Patel
Alternative ending

 According to my opinion the movie should ended like this that at

the time of entering the earths atmosphere their spaceship does
not have enough force/speed for entering into earths atmosphere
due to which they were bounced back into the space and died
due to lack of oxygen and energy.
Rahul dhakad
Alternative ending

 According to my views the movie should ended like this “on the
day when they faced high amount of carbon dioxide, have faced
serious health issues which was not detected at that time. After
landing safely on earth, all of them found infected with serious
health issues .

Anurag patel
Alternative ending

 Though I seriously like the entire plot of the movie but if I would
had an option, then I would have different ending. At the time of
entering the earth atmosphere due to damage in their heat
shield they were not able to reach to the surface of the earth as
their shield was not able to absorb the pressure and without
reaching the earth surface, the team of Apollo 13 died in earth
outer atmosphere.
