Vibration Cause Identification Vibration can be due to many causes: improper design, the effect of system environment, practical manufacturing limits, poor installation, component deterioration, operation outside of design limits, or a combination of the above. The root cause of a vibration problem in a rotating machine can be determined by careful study and analysis of the vibration signals, Cause Dominant Frequency Spectrum, Time Domain Orbit Shape Mass unbalance Shaft bow Misalignment 1x 1x 1X and 2x High | x with much lower harmonics; circular or elliptic orbits Run down plot shows decrease of vibration at critical speed Equally high 1 x and 2x, figure 8 orbits
