Ball Mill
• Grinding equipment
• Uses hard steel balls for grinding or blending a
substance.
• Balls are made of iron, steel or tungsten
carbide.
• Usually working as continuous machines.
Working Principle
• Attrition
collision between particles and balls.
• Impact of balls (as they fall back after being
lifted through certain height by rotating shell).
THEORY OF BALL MILL
• As the balls are lifted, their path is circular,
whereas the path of dropping balls is
parabolic
Construction
• Ball Mill consist of hollow cylindrical shell
rotating about its axis.
• Partially filled with balls made of steel,
stainless steel, ceramics or rubber.
• Liners:
Inner surface of shell is lined with
abrasive-resistant material such as manganese
steel or rubber( more efficient), cast iron,
alloyed with nickel(Ni-hard) etc.
• Shell:
shell is constructed from rolled mild
steel plates (welded together) to sustain impact
and heavy loadings.
• Mill ends:
mill ends are may be of nodular or
gray cast iron with ‘dia’ less than about 1m.
• Trunnion bearings:
trunnions bearings are
made from cast iron or steel and fixed with
bolts.
• Grease is used as
lubricants for trunnion
bearings in small mill
• But oil is favored in
large ball mills.
Working
• Material to be ground is fed from left and
product is discharged through right.
• The product may also be discharge by
overflow through trunnion bearing.
• Metal balls 30 to 50%
• Material 60% approximately
• Speed of Rotation
Critical Speed
• Speed required for efficient grinding
• Always operated at low speed than critical
• Approximately at a speed of 15 rpm
• Normally operated at 75% of critical speed.
Types Of Ball Mill
 Cylindroconical Ball Mill
• The shell of this mill
consists of a flat cone
(obtuse) followed by a
short cylindrical section
and
• a steep cone (acute) at
the discharge end.
• These mills may be used
both for dry and wet
grinding.
• Widely used in ore
processing(particularly
sulphide ores)
Cylindrical Ball Mill
• cylindrical shape of the
shell having uniform
diameter
Classification:
• Peripheral discharge
ball mills
• overflow ball mills
• Grate(diaphragm)
discharge ball mill
Multiple compartment ball mills:

• Long cylindrical mill

• divided into two or
more compartments
• used when high
reduction ratios are to
be achieved
• Also called tube ball mill
due to high length to
diameter ratio(5:3)
Applications
• Grinding of drugs
• Having wide range of uses in Pharmaceutical
industry.
• Grinding materials such as coal and pigments
• Grinding of feldspar for pottery
• Can be used for continuous operation.
Advantages
• Cost of installation and grinding medium is
low.
• Produce very fine particles
• Suitable for milling toxic substance
• Suitable for both batch or continuous
operation.
• Applicable for materials of all degrees of
hardness.
Disadvantage
• Contamination of product
• High machine noise level
• Milling time is long
• Difficult to clean after use
Efficiency of Ball Mill
• Pulp density of feed
• Should operate between 65 to 80% by solid
weight
• Surface area of grinding medium
Capacity of Ball Mill
• Size of mills
• Hardness of ore
• Reduction in size
• Efficiency
Cost of Ball Mill
• Power
• Supplies
• Labor
Varieties
Planetary ball mills:

• Second type of ball mill.

• Smaller than common ball mills.
• Mainly used for grinding of sample materials
down to very small sizes.
