Construction of the plant began in 1970.
Completion of the reactors:
No. 1: 1977.
No. 2: 1978.
No. 3: 1981.
No. 4: 1983.
Reactors were Planned:
No. 5, was around 70% at the time of the
disaster.
No. 6.
After of the disaster:
Construccion on No. 5 and No. 6 were cancelled
in 1989.
Rector No. 2 was permanently shut down in 1991
after a fire broke out.
Reactors 1 and 3 were closed due to an
agreement Ukraine made with the European
United in 1995.
Ocurred on 26 April 1986 in the reactor o. 4 during a
systems test which simulated a station blackout
power-failure.
Uncontrolled reaction conditions were: reactor design
flaws and the reactor operators arranging the core in a
manner contrary to the checklist for the test.
Water flashed into steam generating a destructive
steam explosion and a subsequent open-air graphite
fire
Deaths:
During the accident: one immediately after the
explosion, and the other compounded by a
lethal dose of radiation.
After the accident: 134 servicemen were
hospitalized with acute radiation syndrome
(ARS), of which 28 firemen and employees died
in the days-to-months afterward.
600.000 people received radiation doses for
decontamination work, 5.000.000 people lived in
contaminated areas and 400.000 in severely
contaminated areas.
Russia, Ukraine and Belarus have been burdened
with cotinuing and sustancial descontamination
and monthly compensation costs of the Chernobyl
disaster.
The remains of the No. 4 reactor building were
enclosed in a large cover which was named the "Object
Shelter", often known as "sarcophagus."
The Elephant’s Foot is a large mass of black corium
with many layers, externally resembling tree bark and
glass. It is named for its wrinkly appearance,
resembling the foot of an elephant. Radiactivity near
the elephant’s foot was 10.000 roentgens.
Illegal tourism due to Chernobyl Plant is great
atraction. Thousands of people turn to illegal tourim
because it’s very difficult to get permission to go
legally.
