What is Fuel Cell?

 A fuel cell is a special type of galvanic cell in which the

reactants are continuously supplied as they are consumed
and the products are continuously removed.
 It is a electrochemical device that combines hydrogen and
oxygen to produce electrical energy and water and heat
are bye-products.
 It is reverse electrolysis process which is used in different
applications.
Principle And Working

 Principle
 A fuel cell is based upon the reaction between oxygen and
a gaseous fuel hydrogen or methane. When hydrogen
burns in air, an exothermic reaction occurs. A lot of
chemical energy is released in the form of heat and light.
This energy is used for cutting and welding metals. In fuel
cell reaction, hydrogen is oxidized to water.
H2(g) + O2(g)------------ H2O(g) + Heat
WORKING

 If the oxidation-reduction reaction showed in previous slide

occurs in separate compartments connected in series then
electrons released in the oxidation of hydrogen in one
compartment begins to flow through the external circuit
towards the other compartments and these electrons bring
about reduction of oxygen and the electricity begins to flow in
the circuit. The energy released from the reaction of hydrogen
with oxygen to form water is converted into electrical energy.
Redox Reaction

 Anode Reaction 2H2(g) + 4OH-(aq) ---------- 4H2O(l) + 4e-

 Cathode Reaction O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e- ----------- 4OH- (aq)
 Net Reaction 2H2(g) + O2(g) ---------------- 2H2O(l)
This net reaction is the equation for the burning of hydrogen
in oxygen but in a fuel cell it is burning without flame. Thus the electron
released in the oxidation of hydrogen flow through the circuit towards
the cathode.
A hydrogen-oxygen cell delivers 0.9V.
