Phases of Matter

SOLID

❏ Molecules in the solid phase

have the least amount of
energy
❏ The particles in a solid are
tightly packed and locked in
place.
❏ They dont have space between
them
liquid
❏ The particles can move freely.
❏ A liquid has more energy than a
solid.
❏ The particles are close together
but are able to move
Gas

➔ A gas is matter in which the

molecules are widely separated.
➔ Energy level high
➔ Move freely
➔ Move at high speeds
Plasma
➔ Very spread out but moves randomly.
➔ Particles are very spread out
➔ Its an ionized gas, a gas into which
sufficient energy is provided to free
electrons from atoms or molecules.
GAS TO LIQUID

Condensation -is the change

of the physical state of matter
from the gas phase into the
liquid phase, and is the
reverse of evaporation.
LIQUID TO SOLID

Freezing - is a phase transition in

which a liquid turns into a solid when
its temperature is lowered to or below
its freezing point.
SOLID TO LIQUID

❏ Melting Point- There is a special

temperature for every substance.
❏ When a solid reaches the
temperature of its melting point, it
can become a liquid.
❏ Liquid water freezes and becomes
solid ice when the molecules lose
energy.
LIQUID TO GAS

Evaporation - Evaporation is
a type of vaporization that
occurs on the surface of a
liquid as it changes into the
gas phase.
