THE DIVERSITY OF SHRUBS AND

TREES PLANT SPECIES IN AIR-

POLLUTED AREA AROUND
HIGHWAYS IN YOGYAKARTA

BACKGROUND
• Trafic congestions are often occured in Yogyakarta’s highways.
• Numbers of motor vehicle in Yogyakarta reached 3.773.187 in 2012 (BPS,
2012)
• Thus, it brings air pollution to the highways.
• Vegetation / plant community is the best solution to maintain air condition.
• Vegetations chosen are the one that can absorb pollutans.
• Not only pollutan absorber, another advantages are considered, i.e. being
shade plant and sound absorber (Anatari and Sundra, 2002)
PROBLEMS
1. What kinds of plant species with the habitus of trees and shrubs that
successfully lived in Yogyakarta highways?
2. How is the air quality in Yogyakarta highways?
GOALS
1. To find out the plant species within habitus of trees and shrubs lived
successfully in Yogyakarta highways.
2. To understand the rate of pollution occurred in Yogyakarta highways, by
knowing the quality of the air.
BENEFITS
• Theoretical benefit
• Providing scientific contributions to list plants with ability of air pollution-
resistant.
• Practical benefit
• The result of the study can be used to draw out the relation between air
pollution and plant species lived around Yogyakarta highways.
• The results of the study can be used as a means to develop a strategy
for trees planting and greening to reduce air pollution around
Yogyakarta highways.
