DESAPOINT 1372 Supply & Demand
Ideal use
Excess demand (Cap. <<<D): Too much demand relative to capacity at a
given time. Hurriedness of service providers might lead into poor
perception of the service if not delivering poor services. Thus customer
satisfaction will be low leading to low profitability of the company in the
long run.
Is it possible to have:
Optimum capacity = maximum capacity?
Addressing problem of fluctuating Demand
Two basic approaches:
1. Adjust level of capacity to meet demand
Need to understand productive capacity and how it varies on an
incremental basis. (altering the lines in the figure)
2. Manage level of demand
Use marketing strategies to smooth out peaks, fill in valleys
Demand Demand
too high Adjust Capacity too low
↑ Cap. temporarily
Stretch people, facilities,
Adjust use of Resources
equipment, time temporarily Schedule downtime during periods of
Use part time employees low Demand
Cross train employees Perform maintenance and renovations
Outsource activities Schedule vacation and employee training
Rent or share facilities/equipt. strategically
Invite self-service customers Modify or move facilities and equipment
Invite customers to share Flexible use of resources
Demand patterns
Predictable cycles. So …. Ensure supply is available during
that time.
Random fluctuations e.g. those that vary with weather,
natural calamities. So … prepare if can.
Demand may seem random, but analysis may reveal a
predictable demand cycle for different segments (patterns
within patterns). So …… combined strategy.
