Types of drilling mud
• Natural mud
• Fresh water mud (low ph, high ph)
• Salt water mud
• calcium mud
• Oil emulsion mud
• Polymer mud
• Oil base mud
• Invert emulsion mud
• Balance activity oil mud
• Natural mud
In some areas drilling can be started with
water and the clays.
• Fresh water mud
Salinity < 1%
a) Low ph muds:-
-Ph between 8.0 to 9.0
-Phosphate, caustic soda used as thinning agent
b) High ph muds :-
-Ph is maintained between 9.5 to 11.
- Mud possesses low viscosity, gel strength and
low water loss characteristics.
- High resistance to contamination.
• Salt water mud :- these muds are made on
basis of salt concentration.
- Brackish and salt water 10,000- 35,000 ppm.
- Saturated salt water muds 315000 ppm.
• Calcium mud :- Impart special properties to
the fluids. Such as-
- Low viscosity.
- Low gel strength.
- High resistance to contamination.
- High tolerance for fluids.
• Oil emulsion muds :-
Water based muds in which oil is added from 5
to 15 % which form emulsion.
This provide lubrication, save power, wear and
tear by reducing torque.
• Low solids polymer muds :- basically solid
control of the mud.
These solids can be controlled by –
a) Mechanically i.e. shale shaker, cyclone,
centrifuge.
b) Chemically i.e. flocculation, floatation
