Listening

 Listening is the complex and selective process of


receiving, focusing, deciphering (decode), accepting
and storing what we hear.
 An individual in business spends most of the day
listening and talking.
 Listening plays an important role in business.
 Listening is learning
 The wise listens more than speak.
STEPS IN LISTENING
 Five steps in listening
1. Receiving: Getting ready and physically hearing the
message.
2. Focusing: Imparting due attention on the message,
its contents, and the speaker with eye contact.
3. Deciphering: Decoding/analyzing the message in
terms of your experience, knowledge, school of
thoughts, personal background, needs. The steps
includes evaluating the non verbal communication
of the speaker.
4. Accepting: Trying to understand the meaning,
summarizing and drawing conclusions.
5. Storing: Holding the message in memory. Taking
notes to facilitate memory.
